Summary 2: Shepherding a Child's Heart: not only changed behaviour but also a changed heart.

From
SHEPHERDING A CHILD’S HEART BY TEDD TRIPP

Originally put together for our grown-up children, with much love and admiration. who, like us, are not perfect parents, but whose hearts are in parenting.

SUMMARY 2: NOT ONLY CHANGED BEHAVIOUR BUT ALSO CHANGED HEART

1) What is going on in our child’s heart

2) Goal: more than changed behaviour – work towards a changed heart.

2a) Our children’s needs are greater than good behaviour.

3) My child’s behaviour reflects his/her heart.

4) The attitudes of our children’s hearts, drive their behaviour.

5) A change of behaviour flows from a change of heart.

6) Matthew 15: 8" 'These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

7) It is possible to be washed on the outside and still unclean on the inside.

8) The HEART needs to be addressed.

9) Proper behaviour is required, yes, but more than being good is to be aimed at.

10) Example: 2 children, 1 toy, a fight.

You find out what happened and the one who had the toy first, is the winner – justice is done and it turns out that there was one offender.
11) Same scenario:2 children, 1 toy, a fight.
You find out what has happened and hopefully justice reigns.

But this time there are 2 offenders.

Neither of the children cared for the other – only about themselves. I want this toy. I will only be happy if I have this toy. I will have this toy regardless of what it means to you.
12) All behaviour is linked to the attitudes of the heart.

13) The attitudes of the heart need addressing.

14) It becomes a heart issue, not just behaviour correction.

15) There is a deeper aim than mere behaviour change. It is about what happens in the heart.

16) Jesus can change our hearts. What is going on in my child’s heart?

17) Start with the behaviour, work from their back to the heart, exposing heart issues.

18) Behaviour plus heart will dictate your goals and inform your methods.
